Reddit's Misogyny Problem
Reddit bans feminist communities for not being "inclusive" enough but allows violent misogynists to post freely on the platform.
Reddit is a social media site with individual communities (subreddits), similar to Facebook. Reddit has had an issue with misogynistic communities since the beginning of the platform.
Multiple communities such as r/dykeconversion , r/howwouldyouusefriends , r/borrowed_panties, r/womenarethings, and many others are allowed to freely exist on the platform, despite being deeply misogynistic, and many enabling illegal behaviors such as non-consensual pornographic content. Even though many have been reported numerous times.
Here are some posts deemed acceptable by these respective subreddits, some of their subreddit descriptions, and the behavior/beliefs of some individuals who moderate them. It should be noted that this is only a brief list and I will be posting more screenshots and further documenting these subreddits in the future. These all came to my attention via the ban female hate subs community on Reddit, which has previously been banned, then reinstated, by Reddit admins.
For additional context, the last image depicts a woman being waterboarded while naked. R/womenarethings moderator commented on this video with “Might be a little extreme but I’d love to keep a sub like that, funny restrained with her head underwater, and a snorkel or breathing tube for her mouth. After a couple of days like that she’d probably be exhausted from having to manually breathe all the time c:”
Many may try to argue that this content isn’t banned in the platform because Reddit admins & mods care about free speech or they may argue that the moderation on the site is lax. However, that is clearly false because when you research further you find that the social media site has heavily censored criticism of the trans movement & Reddit admins heavily censored posts acknowledging the Aimee Chancellor situation.
Feminist and unapologetically female-centered subreddits are also often promptly banned permanently from the platform. Some examples would be: r/Gendercritical, r/Gender_critical, r/radfemtheory, r/Gendercriticalgerman, r/LDropTheG, r/GCScandinavia, r/FinnishGenderCritical, r/thefairersex, r/RadFemPregnancy, r/TruePCOS, etc. In addition, all of the subreddits supposedly ‘for women’ are disproportionately filled with male commenters and even male mods. This is especially true of all ‘lesbian’ subreddits. These include: r/LesbianActually, r/actuallesbians, r/ActualLesbiansOver25, r/lesbiangang, r/olderlesbians, r/lesbianfashionadvice, and r/LesbianGamers.
Subreddits based on providing support for female reproductive diseases aren’t female-centered either, with multiple women with these conditions being made to feel unwelcome & even banned in some cases if they don’t pretend the condition they have is a gender-neutral experience. A community ultimately isn’t feminist or female-centered if men are allowed to dictate what can and can’t be said within that given community.
The CEO of Reddit is Steve Huffman, unfortunately, I have been unable to find any public business contacts like a Twitter/X account. However, the official Twitter/X account for Reddit is: @Reddit
Maybe it is pertinent to your message, but I think you could have did without the graphic images. I could not get through the article. I'd suggest putting evidence/pictures under a link in the future so people can choose to view or not.
